Children of Morta Complete Edition Review

Initially, when I started playing Children of Morta, I wanted to write separate posts as I progressed through the game, revealing the plot, new game features, and characters. But yesterday I decided to write a review and then supplement it with more substantive posts, and not spoil the plot at all. And all because despite the fact that I don’t like the roguelike genre, I really liked Children of Morta. I know that the game is not new and you’ve probably already heard about it, but I couldn’t help but share my thoughts about it with you.

Gameplay of Children of Morta

Children of Morta is an action role-playing game with a rogue-lite approach to character development, where you play not just one character, but a whole, unusual family of heroes. Levels are generated automatically according to the selected zone, so each run will be slightly different from the previous one. In addition, events will be generated on the levels that will affect the sequence of the plot development or the appearance of additional content in the game, such as merchants.

The game has co-op, you can play together both locally and online. I should note that playing together is easier and more interesting. But you have to play in separate saves. That is, first you play the game at your save, inviting a friend, and then again, but at his save. At the same time, character development and family development trees also work only for the person who created the game (host).

There are two mods in the game, the first is open to everyone and involves following the storyline. The second mod is a test of family members’ strength. There you will constantly travel through dungeons and in case of death, all progress is deleted, unlike the storyline mod of the game.

In Children of Morta, you are encouraged to play with all family members and not focus on one character. This is also done through encouragement, for example, each character has passive skills that affect the whole family, no matter who you play. So, the more characters you level up, the easier the overall game will be. But in addition to encouragement, there is also punishment. If you play the same character too often, he or she will get a debuff and some wounds will have reduced health and attack. This debuff can be removed, but only if you are lucky enough to get golden eggs on the levels. I won’t go into this issue. 😅

The game has already been completed and has seven active characters in total. (In the screenshot above, I haven’t yet unlocked one lady who I really liked for her skills, but I didn’t play as her in my saves, unfortunately). All of them are unique in their skills and have different fighting styles. The first two – the father and the eldest daughter – are a typical warrior and a typical archer. Then there is more diversity, from magicians to monks. I liked Mark the most, he’s a monk and fights in close combat, and Linda is the typical archer (and the mage, who is not visible in the picture).

The game itself is quite simple: you go down into the dungeons, kill monsters, collect rewards, and so on until you level up your characters well enough to move on with the storyline. If you play in the challenge mode, it all comes down to roguelike and dungeon crawler. But there’s a fairly balanced combat system with a lot of randomly generated auxiliary abilities.

The narrative of Children of Morta

The plot is not complicated, but interesting and I don’t want to spoil it. I just wanted to mention that the game is aimed at immersing you in the story. Between levels you will see various videos that reveal some new details of the plot, some of which you may miss if you play through the story too quickly. Your adventures in the dungeon can also influence how the story develops.

In addition, you will see new dialogues between the characters of your family, which show their everyday relationships or reflect their attitude to the current storyline. This makes the game more diverse and interesting in my opinion.

Overall impression of Children of Morta

My overall impression is very good and positive. I would recommend Children of Morta, especially for a joint playthrough, it’s a great way to spend evenings together.

The one thing I don’t like is graphics. I have certain vision issues that make it difficult for me to play pixelated games, especially where everything moves dynamically and colours overlap or merge.

But a definite plus is that the game is already completely finished and even has two cheap add-ons that will make the game even more interesting. It has almost no bugs (except for the moments in co-op) and is harmoniously packed. Due to the fact that the game has been released in full access for two years now, it is often on sale and costs very little, and Children of Morta is compatible with Steam Deck. In short, it’s a nice and simple game for those who like or are interested in the roguelite genre.

And that’s all for now. Thank you for watching my channels and reading my posts. I really appreciate your subscriptions, likes and comments. I am open to your suggestions for future episodes. Have a nice day and bye!
