Path of Exile 3.20 The Forbidden Sanctum Mechanics Guide

New League in Path of Exile patch 3.20 which is called The Forbidden Sanctum will surprise you with new roguelike mechanics. It is a league not limited by time but by your dodging skills. We will tell you what it means below.

Before we start let me tell you that this post will be updated when we get more information, for example, about The Forbidden Sanctum bosses and other somehow hidden features for now if any.

Engage The Forbidden Sanctum for the first time

As in any previous league, you will meet the first portal to the separate realm in the area after you leave Lion Eye’s Watch. In the image below you see the sign of it on the minimap and the portal itself.

When you enter the portal you get to a room where you prepare for the run.

There you are able to leave to the previous area, see the Sanctum Map and later choose relics to take on this run. We will tell you how to unlock Sanctum relics below. Anyway, if you want to begin the run, click on the Sanctum Map and choose a room to enter. You can choose only one per run (one per area you met the portal in).

These rooms are random as well as their rewards. In the first run, you start from only one on the left. Actually, you will start from the only room every time you fail. It is the roguelike element, if you fail in any room you start from the very first room, but the rooms reset, so you lose all your progress and rooms. The only thing that stays is relics, but again we will talk about them later.

In case you don’t want to clear the room right away you can store Sanctum Room for later. As you see in the picture above in such a case you will not be able to run the Sanctum in this area. In later areas, you can run stored rooms after that area’s Sanctum Room is completed. You can store 8 rooms for later. It means that you can click on the store button and pick a room to store then leave. Next time in the other area you meet the Sanctum encounter again you can either store one more room or run one obligatory or all/some of the stored rooms.

Some of the rooms randomly will have buffs and debuffs. So be careful when you pick a room. When you enter the room you will see regular monsters and a miniboss (some rooms don’t contain a boss and you can simply run to the exit avoiding any mobs). The vast majority of the rooms will require you to kill the miniboss that guards it to exit the room and enter the place where you can get rewards you’ve seen in the description of the room.

Oh, and in case you don’t like any of the rooms you can reset Sanctum. It will reset all rooms on the map. By the way, the name of the last boss you can see at once, so if you need another boss reroll. You may guess that you need to hover over the last room of the Sanctum Archive map to see what the boss is.

The reward from the example contains a Fountain. It recovers 25% of Maximum Resolve but if you have enough Aureus (currency on the top of the fountain). What are these things? Let’s move on.

The Forbidden Sanctum Resolve and Aureus

When you enter the room you will see a bar of Resolve you have left. Each time you get a hit some amount of this Resolve will be taken away.

If this bar goes to 0 you fail the whole run and will need to start all over again. Over the bar, there are icons of effects in this room and under it is the number of collected Aureus. Also, keep in mind that if you fail in the Sanctum it will not count as death so you will stay on the Hard Core.

Now let’s talk about Aureus – a specific currency needed only in the Sanctum. It You will get a few for killing monsters in rooms, and as loot from chests there. But most of them you get as rewards for competing rooms. For example, if you choose a room that mentions “Major Treasure Reward” it will look like this.

Some of the treasure caches will appear in other corners of this area as well. These caches contain only Aureus. This currency is needed for upgrades in Sanctum and to recover resolve. Also, on higher levels, you will need it to buy boons.

The deeper you go in the Sanctum the more Aureus you collect. The number of them you can see in the top right corner of the Sanctum Archives map. Also, you can see the patch and rooms that you can choose next.

When you fail all this progress resets and you start from the very beginning. And the game will show you your current result.

How to unlock The Forbidden Sanctum Relics?

If you played some of your Sanctum Runs you might be confused about the absence of relics. Although, you will see the button on the Sanctum Archives map related to relics you don’t get them. But it is because you will get your first Sanctum relic from Divinia, a new PoE NPC related to the Forbidden Sanctum league.

Path of Exile 3.20 The Forbidden Sanctum Templar Relics List

Divinia stands in The Forest Encampment (the second city, Act II). But she will only introduce herself. To begin a quest with her you need to enter the area called The Fellshrine Ruins. there she will appear next to you asking to find the Sanctum Entrance outside the Fellshrine Cathedral.

You will easily find it as it is near the entrance to the next location. Also, it is marked on the mini-map as the portal of the Forbidden Sanctum you have seen before.

You need to enter the Forbidden Sanctum and appear in the familiar place where you see the Sanctum Map. There you will talk to Divinia to unlock Relic’s table and finish the quest with her to get the Sanctum Relic as a reward.

This relic is bound to you and you cannot share or sell it. But you can store it in the Relic Locker. Come to the Relic table in the Forbidden Sanctum (next to the Sanctum Map) and click on the icon with items of it.

It opens the window of the Sanctum Relic Locker. You may get confused about who to put the relic there. Click on the icon on the Relic Altar with the weapons again, it will close the Relic Locker and will open your inventory. Click on the relic, then repeat the previous action again while the relic is bonded to your mouse – click on the icon with the weapons under Relic Altar and put the relic in the Relic Stash.

There you can store your relics. Every time before you enter the room of the Sanctum you need to interact with the Relics table and put the relics you want to use in the Relic Altar and confirm the action.

No need to remove it after you are done. Also, you can place as many relics on the Altar as it fits. To unlock more space in the Relic Altar you need to progress through the game. Just don’t forget to s confirm the relics before every room you ought to clear.

The Forbidden Sanctum Boons

The Sanctum’s rooms hold many secrets. Some contain ancient fountains you can rest at to restore a portion of your resolve. Others will curse you with an affliction, hindering your progress. These afflictions stack up as you explore deeper and deeper within the Sanctum. You can also receive boons, blessings that help you overcome the Sanctum’s dangers. Each time you enter the Sanctum, you will encounter a unique layout that you must assess and adapt to as you explore.

Path of Exile 3.20 The Forbidden Sanctum Boons List

Inside the Sanctum, you will find gold coins called Aureus, a currency that the Templar used for commerce. It’s stored in treasure chests and falls from slain monsters. Although these coins belong to the Sanctum and will not leave with you, they can be traded with a merchant who you may encounter from time to time. Spend your Aureus wisely as it can be used to purchase a crucial boon when the time is right.

Sanctum Packs

The sinister powers controlling the Sanctum will occasionally present you with an Accursed Pact. These pacts offer you a powerful benefit with a dangerous cost. Although the Pact will tempt you greatly, you must choose with care. The result of your choice could signal the end of your time in the Sanctum or be the turning point in your success.

Boons and pacts you will meet on higher levels as separate rewards for different rooms.

For now, it is pretty much all you need to know to play the Forbidden Sanctum league. Just try to dodge everything you meet in the room and kill the miniboss to get to the next room. On fail repeat all from the start. When the main new bosses of the Sanctum appear in the game we will write about them too.
