Path of Exile 3.17 Archnemesis League Mechanics Guide

The Archnemesis league starts on 4th February 2022. And along with new mechanics, it brings new endgame content that we have described earlier. In this post, we will tell you all the details about how the new Path of Exile 3.17 Archnemesis League mechanics works.

In the Archnemesis league, you’ll build your own Rare boss fights by applying new monster modifiers to petrified monsters, found throughout every area. These modifiers add dangerous behaviours to their targets but also imbue them with valuable rewards. Each subsequent petrified monster you imbue within an area keeps all of the previous modifiers applied, allowing you to build some extremely difficult and rewarding encounters. There are over 60 new boss modifiers to discover, more than half of which can be created by combining other modifiers in specific recipes to unlock the most powerful and rewarding modifiers.

PoE 3.17 Archnemesis Mechanics

This is the brief description mentioned by GGG on their official website. But what does it mean? To put it straight. You will find new league specific items that will drop from monsters while you clear the areas. Now we know about 10 specific items that will have different effects on monsters when you use them. These items are needed to get rewards. Similar to Tane you will see what rewards you can get if you apply the archnemesis item. Some of them were mentioned on the stream. For example, Toxic below applies poison mechanics to the enemies that you encounter but gives in return general items and gems. This is one of the worst options.

While Innocence Touched is one of the best and grants currency items with 3x multiplier. But it will also give the monsters the abilities of Innocence.

As we have already mentioned there are at least 10 different archnemesis items that grant different modifiers and rewards. But there are 60 different recipes that have hidden rewards and modifiers. You can pair different items to unlock recipes at an Archnemesis statue.

Archnemesis statue

This is the place where all the fun begins. When you have enough applicable items find the archnemesis statue in that area and interact with it. There you will see space where you can insert the items and see what rewards, recipes and modifiers you will get on the monsters.

You can apply up to four archnemesis mods at a statue to unlock new recipes and get better rewards. But be careful when you apply recipes. All of them will add to each other but not replace. The same thing is about the rewards. If you apply Innocence-touched every successful new try will grant you with currencies and other rewards that you additionally apply to the next encounters. But all the monster modifiers will be added too, so every new encounter will have Innocence abilities and additional mods that you apply to them.

In the example above you can see many rewards that you will have from the encounter. But every applied archnemesis item will add specific modifiers and enhancements to the monsters.

Archnemesis Recipes

As it is mentioned on the stream there are over 35 recipes that you can use by combining different mods (archnemesis items that we have described above). How it works. You combine two mods at the archnemesis statue and they form a new mod or set of mods together – that is a recipe. What is important is that different archnemesis recipes can give you better recipes if they are combined together.

Every archnemesis statue will give a chance to place up to four archnemesis mods to unlock new archnemesis recipes and better rewards. The order in which you apply the mods matter. It can influence the recipes that you get and the number of rewards.

Most part of the mods is created by combining them on the same monster. But carefully read what new mod it applies to the monster as it can become really dangerous. This new mod that you got from the recipe can be further used to unlock new recipes.

How to unlock new archnemesis recipes?

The answer is mentioned below, but we will make it more visual in the list below:

apply two of them on one monster at an archnemesis statue (you can apply them in turns, but in THE SAME area)
the new recipe that you get can be used in future with other mods to unlock more recipes
and so on ans so forth

All items that you use at the Statue will show how many undiscovered recipes you have with this item. As you see below – Overcharged unlocks two other recipes. So you need to pair it with another item at one encounter at the statue to unlock them.

Also, you will see when you have needed items that form a recipe. They will highlight in your Archnemesis window as you can see below. The borders are blinking. If they are white you have these recipes unlocked, yellow it hasn’t been unlocked yet and red – you cannot use these mods together.

To unlock the recipe that these two trigger you need to clear the encounters with them. Firstly apply one of them and clear the statue, after that find the next statue in THE SAME AREA and activate the other highlighted item.

Clear the encounter with the modes from these two at once and when you do the new recipe will drop at once. In this case, Frost Strider the new recipe is shown below.

You can use it in further encounters to unlock new recipes. Some of the mods cannot be used together and you will see them highlighted with a red border. Naturally, after unlocking the recipe it mods that activate this known recipe title will be shown when you hover on them.

So your task at the start of the game is to unlock all low-level recipes that come from combinations from the given archnemesis mods. And then use the new mods for unlocking better recipes. Below you can see the list of all Archnemesis recipes.
