How to learn counterattacks in KCD

Counterattacks in Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a guarantee of victorious battles. Everything you have learned about fighting before the counterattacks only brings you into the combat system and doesn’t give you a high chance of success in fights with strong opponents. Therefore, to be prepared for any fight, I advise you to learn counterattacks as soon as possible. I’ll tell you where and how to do it below.

You will learn the basic fundamentals of combat in Skalitz. But it’s more about how to hold a sword and which key to hit. It’s definitely not about the combat system. When you first walk through the game, these skills are barely enough to kill the first enemies when you return to the ruined Skalitz. Therefore, before you engage in any clashes with enemies after completing the starting training arch, focus on learning how to counterattack with the weapon you choose as your main weapon. This can be done either before or after you buy a horse at the start of KCD, if you want to buy one at all.

You don’t need any initial funds to do this, you just need to know at what plot moments in Kingdom Come: Deliverance Captain Bernard gives you the opportunity to train and learn new things with him. This is what we will actually talk about.

Where and when can you learn counterattacks in KCD?

Almost immediately after the training quest with Captain Bernard. After you talk to Radzig and join his service, he will send you to train with Captain Bernard. He can be found in the battle arena outside the walls of Rattay.

Start a training quest battle with Bernard. He will teach you more about the combat system as a player. Here, the captain will open up the ability to block attacks, dodge, and perform a trick attack. Then he will take you to the shooting range to teach you how to shoot a bow. The culmination of this training will be a competition with Sir Hans Capon. I advise you to spend time and beat him in both shooting and duelling to make additional progress in the respective skills.

Unfortunately, Bernard won’t teach you anything new right after that, so you’ll have to continue with the storyline. Go to the town hall and talk to the bailiff, after which you can go straight back to Bernard and skip the meeting with Nightingale at the church for now.

Now Bernard is ready to teach you new swordplay techniques. But don’t rush to learn counterattacks, learn the combinations of blows first. They will also come in handy. Then check if you have reached the 3rd level of the desired weapon skill. Only then Bernard agrees to teach you how to counterattack with this weapon.

If you haven’t reached the third level of the desired weapon yet, don’t be discouraged. Select training with Bernard and choose a training fight with your desired weapon. You can choose to fight with a training weapon, which will also improve your skills and won’t harm you or your equip. But to speed up the process, choose a fight with a real weapon. In this case, be prepared for Bernard to deal you heavy, almost fatal damage. After all, he will counterattack almost every blow you make. Stock up on bandages to stop the bleeding and marigold potion to restore your health.

When you reach the 3rd level of skill with the weapon of your choice, ask Bernard to teach you masterful strikes, and then choose which counterattacks you are interested in. The captain will agree and train you; that’s it now you know how to counterattack. In my case, with a sword.

To consolidate your success, you can have another practice fight with Bernard, now that you know how counterattacks work. I actually defeated him in a real sword fight right after that. From then on, it’s all about your skills as a player, catch the rhythm of the battle and counterattack your opponents for lightning-fast victories.
