Due to the current worldwide situation, this year championship was under a big question. But fortunately, Riot Games have found a possibility to hold the major eSports event for all League of Legends community. Today we will tell you when and how the 2020 League of Legends World Championship will be held. And also we will share the list of teams that will participate in the event.
When 2020 League of Legends World Championship will start?
First of all, you need to know that the main event and the beginning of Worlds 2020 are different events, which will start on different dates. 2020 League of Legends World Championship begins 25th September 2020. All events will take place in Shanghai, China. But the main event of LoL Worlds 2020 Championship will start October 3rd, 2020. And if you are interested in seeding and The Play-In and Group Draws show, you should turn on Youtube (we share the link below) September 15th. Then you will see ten teams qualified for the play-in group stage and regional bests being split randomly into groups.
So we will highlight the main dates of League of Legends Worlds 2020 below:
- September 15th, 2020 – Draw Show (all teams will be split into groups)
- September 25th, 2020 – Play-in groups the first day of matches (Worlds 2020 begin)
- October 1st, 2020 – Main Event groups the first day of matches (you will see the regional champions playing)
Further we will, tel you some details about the format of the event.
League of Legends World Championship 2020 Format
This year the were changes made into the format due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, not all the teams can show their performance on the stage. Also, Vietnam sportsmen had to cancel their participation and we will not see Team Flash and GAM Esports this year.
Note that in all games will be active patch 10.19 but with Samira and Yone disabled.
So instead of 24 spots on this year Worlds will have 22 and their regional split if the following:
- 4 from CN China
- 4 from EU Europe
- 3 from KR Korea
- 3 from NA North America
- 2 from PCS PCS (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and Southeast Asia)
2 from VN Vietnam
- 1 from BR Brazil
- 1 from CIS CIS
- 1 from JP Japan
- 1 from LAT Latin America
- 1 from OCE Oceania
- 1 from TR Turkey
Vietnamese spots were given to Korea and China. We will see two parts of the event: Play-in and the Main Event. In the first one teams will compete get the last 4 places in the Main Event. And in the main event, we will see regional champions and other best of teams including the winners of the play-in stage. Below you can see the list of Worlds 2020 participating teams.
2020 League of Legends World Championship Play-in Teams
This event will start on 25th September 2020 and we will see 10 teams fighting for their place in the Main Event. They will fight for the last 4 places in the Main Event and these teams are:
- LGD Gaming – China
- MAD Lions – Europe
- Team Liquid – North America
- PSG Talon – PCS (TW/HK/MO and SEA)
- INTZ – Brazil
- Unicorns Of Love – CIS
- V3 Esports – Japan
- Rainbow7 – Latin America
- Legacy Esports – Oceania
- Papara SuperMassive – Turkey
Four of these teams will complete the groups for the Main Event in the Worlds 2020. They will play the best of one and two winners in the groups will automatically qualify to the Main Event. Remaining teams will have the second chance in the second round. There teams will play best of five and only 2 more teams will qualify for League of Legends Worlds 2020.
